Sayad
Sayad (فیلم ایرانی صیاد) is a powerful Iranian historical drama released in 2025, directed by Javad Afshar. The film chronicles the life and military career of Lieutenant General Ali Sayad Shirazi, a key figure during the Iran–Iraq War. Known for his strategic brilliance and unwavering commitment to duty, Sayad faced not only the external challenges of war but also internal political tensions, particularly with President Abolhassan Banisadr.
Set during the early 1980s, the narrative follows Sayad’s deployment to Kurdistan, his removal from command due to political conflict, and his eventual reinstatement, where he leads significant operations, including the recapture of Khorramshahr. Actor Ali Sarabi delivers a measured, impactful portrayal of Sayad, supported by a strong ensemble cast including Maral Baniadam and Nader Soleimani.
The film made its debut at the 2025 Fajr Film Festival and sparked discussion for its use of artificial intelligence to recreate Sayad Shirazi’s voice. While opinions were mixed on this technical choice, the film was widely appreciated for its emotional weight, historical accuracy, and respectful depiction of a national hero.
With its blend of personal struggle, wartime intensity, and political drama, Sayad offers a moving portrait of leadership and sacrifice in one of Iran’s most defining eras.
