Maste Eshgh (فیلم “مست عشق”) is a historical drama that explores the life-changing encounter between the revered Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi and the mysterious mystic Shams Tabrizi. Directed by Hassan Fathi, the film transports viewers to the 13th century, portraying a world shaped by faith, scholarship, and rigid social structures. At the height of his reputation as a respected theologian in Konya, Rumi’s orderly and conventional life is disrupted by the arrival of Shams, whose unconventional spirituality challenges accepted beliefs and traditions.

Through intimate conversations and intense spiritual exchanges, Shams awakens in Rumi a deeper understanding of divine love and personal transformation. As Rumi turns inward and begins composing poetry inspired by this awakening, tension grows among his students and family, who fear the powerful influence of the outsider. The profound bond between the two men becomes both a source of inspiration and a cause of conflict, testing loyalty, devotion, and faith.

Visually rich and emotionally layered, the film blends romance, philosophy, and mysticism. It presents love not simply as human affection, but as a transcendent force capable of reshaping identity, destiny, and spiritual purpose, illuminating the origins of Rumi’s enduring poetic legacy.
